Iterations

Jeremy Evans

I remember finding my way to the Rum Factory building near Lime House DLR on a typically damp day in London. His directions took me down a cobbled street and past another crumbling warehouse where expensive looking people happened to be milling with filming equipment for company. The bell didn't work and Jeremy didn't answer his phone, but someone did come out of the building and let me inside.
In the studio we sat surrounded by some of his drawings on the walls and a mishmash of materials on the floor. We started speaking around this project with the notion of what a drawing process is and what shapes the thinking that goes with it. I have admired his idiosyncratic drawings for some time, but for some reason we were soon talking about the videos that he has also created. We spoke about their genesis, and how the process had been very controlled to begin with, and that with the experience of the drawings he wanted to return to the videos with a new mindset. After several hours we left it hanging somewhat, with him planning on a video or perhaps just a script that was still vague to even himself, and us both agreeing that however it would turn out, we would discuss it and see where that would lead.
I don't want to say a lot about his work, so as not to preempt too much how you might experience it. To me it is playful on many levels and approaches some sort of overall coherence, whilst always steering away at the last. There is an overall feel for existential angst that is met with bemusement at every moment.
The three videos that result are born of several iterations over three or so years. Born out of intense moments of productivity separated by long tracts of real life.

If you follow so will I, as I attempt to answer a story, telling isn’t it that I don’t know? A question, firstly in this instance and then again and again until I fade. You ask I answer.

I’d like to take the time to draw out this list to make it complete. Not gonna happen. There are a few images to add to the defeat. No, to add to the making of the pictext listing. Always, always, always. Third and final way. You ask I stop.

Just give me a break 2 3 4.

I’ll take it.

I’m struggling over here.

Take it from me.

Give it a rest 2 3 4 5.

There must be four to five then six.

Oh yeah, I can’t remember what I wrote / have written. Obscured by clarifications.

It’s just a list of words.
